The rural tourism concept has become a successful way to promote sustainable development and improve the socio-cultural and economic health of rural communities. This study focuses on the socio-cultural and economic effects of rural tourism for the development of the rural communities in selected rural destinations. This study involved descriptive and analytical research design with the use of both primary and secondary data. Primary data were obtained by using a proforma to interview local population, tourism entrepreneurs, artisans and related stakeholders associated with the tourism activities and secondary data were collected from books, journals, government reports, and publications. Data collected were analyzed descriptively using frequency distribution, percentage, and mean scores. The results suggest that rural tourism can be a major engine of job creation, higher income for households, development of entrepreneurship, upgrading infrastructure and expansion of local markets, which help to reinforce economic empowerment in rural areas. It also fosters cultural preservation, encourages community involvement, social interaction, and awareness of local traditions and heritage. But cultural commodification, acculturation and demonstration effects are issues which need to be carefully managed. The study concludes that sustainable, community-based rural tourism has the potential to be a catalyst for inclusive community development if good policy is in place, there is active local involvement in the process and there is responsible tourism
