Manuscript Preparation & Style Guide

Manuscripts must be in English or French. Although its principal contributors and audience consists largely of scholars, researchers, and other professionals interested in African finance and economic development, JAD strives to publish articles that are useful to officials in government and international organizations, as well as to business executives. Therefore, the use of equations and mathematical symbols should be limited to the minimum necessary and the author should provide in the manuscript a detailed explanation (in laymen’s terms) of their meaning and relevance to the problem at hand. Manuscripts will be blind reviewed by three academic referees.

Manuscripts to be considered for publication may be submitted in triplicate to:

SUBMISSION FEE

The submission fee for active members of the African Finance and Economics Association is $20.00 and $30.00 for non-members. Payments should be made to the Journal of African Finance and Economic Development. There is no submission fee for authors of invited articles. In addition, the submission fee may be waived upon request in the case of manuscripts from authors based on the African continent.

ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPTS ONLY

Submission of a manuscript to JAD implies that the manuscript is original, is not being considered for publication elsewhere, and has not been published elsewhere either in its current form or in a revised version. The editor does not accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers submitted, and submitted manuscripts will not be returned.

MANUSCRIPT LENGTH

Articles should not exceed 25 double-spaced pages in length. The page limit includes tables, graphs, references, and appendices. Lengthier articles will be considered only in exceptional cases, and at the discretion of the editor.

TYPING AND ARTICLE FORMAT

Articles in English or French should be typed double-spaced on 8 1/2 x 11 inch white bond paper. The following format must be utilized: title page, abstract, text, endnotes, references, tables and/or figures.

TITLE PAGE

The title page should include the following information: title of manuscript; author’s name and affiliation(s): name, address and phone number of the author to whom correspondence is to be sent; acknowledgments if any. This page will be removed before the manuscript is sent to reviewers. Since submitted papers will be blind reviewed, authors should avoid revealing their identities or affiliations elsewhere in the paper.

ABSTRACT

The title of the article and a 100-120 word abstract of the article should be included.

TEXT

A main heading designates the topic of a major section of the manuscript; it should be centered and capitalized, and should not be underlined.

Secondary headings should be set flush with the left margin. Only the major words should be capitalized, they should not be underlined.

Equations are to be displayed on a separate line and numbered consecutively. The last section should provide a summary of the major conclusions.

ENDNOTES

Endnotes should be placed at the end of the manuscript and should precede the references. It is better to minimize them--they should never be used in citing references. It is also better to integrate substantive comments within the text itself rather than to put them in an endnote.

REFERENCES

The references should include only the most relevant papers. In the text, references to publications may appear as follows: “Ajayi (1986) reported that...” or “This problem has been extensively discussed in the literature before {e.g. Kofi (1979), p. 102}”. The author(s) should make sure that there is a strict “one-to-one correspondence” between the names (years) in the text and those on the reference list. At the end of the manuscript (after any appendices), the complete list of references should be listed as follows:

For monographs

Kadjo, Solomon (1981), Essays in Economics. vol.1. Macroeconomics (North-Holland, Amsterdam).

For contributions to collective works

Greene, Joshua (1980), Predictive World Model, in: Collete Shaw and Kwasi Fosu, eds., A world income and trade model for 1975 (Jay Press)3-16.

For Periodicals

Goldfield, Stephen M. and Richard E. Quandt (1983), “A Markov model for switching regressions’, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis 1, 3-15.

For Books

Madura, Jeff (1989), International Financial Management. 2nd ed. New York: West Publishing Company.

TABLES

Tables should be put on separate sheets of paper and should follow the references. Indicate the position of the table as follows:****Put Table 1 Here****

FIGURES

Figures (charts, graphs, etc.) should be put on separate sheets of paper and should follow tables at the end of the manuscript. Since they are expensive to reproduce, JAD asks that they be included only when absolutely necessary for the purposes of comprehension. Authors are responsible for supplying camera-ready copies of their figures.

SUBMISSION OF ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPT

All revisions and corrections by the author(s) must be completed before the final copy of the accepted manuscript is sent to the publisher. Whenever possible, a floppy diskette with the final version of the accepted manuscript should also be sent to the editor. The floppy diskette should be contained in a diskette wrapper, which must show the following information: name of authors, and title of paper; name of hardware utilized to produce diskette; name and version of word processing program utilized to prepare manuscript.
